Hi Diana,
Huge fan of the entire series (I’ve read all of the books at least twice!) and would love to know if this will be airing in Australia?
Thanks so much for your incredible work!
Shelly
love the books hope the series is as enjoyable and that we get to see it here in Ireland
I love your books. Have reread them 5 times. Had always hoped you would make a movie but the series sounds much better as it would last longer and get into more of the story. Hope it comes to Canada soon. I am really looking forward to watching it.
Diana,
I have spent a great deal of my life living in your books, with all the characters and the wonderful
story. I think I have read every book you’ve published! I’ve read the Outlander series a couple times over the years and I recently pre-ordered your latest, ‘In My Own Heart’s Blood’, which I should receive this summer. I always hoped for a movie, but I too think the television series is a better venue and will
reach so many new fans. I jumped on this computer the minute I saw the trailer for the first time. I just
wanted to share my excitement with the rest of the fans who I knew were sharing on line.
Thank you so much for sharing the wonderful story of Jamie and Claire – I am swept away
each time I open your books.
Oh I love the trailer. It is so exciting to see the characters come to life.
I will have to watch many many times before the show starts this summer.
I am also reading the books again on my kindle for the fourth time.
There is always an item or two I forgot or missed the first reading.
Can not wait to see the show.
Thanks to Diana, the Cast & Crew for your hard work !!!!!!
Get plenty of rest for those long days of work.
Susie O.
There’s a new version of the trailer with a different ending at http://www.starz.com/originals/outlander/videos/video/391
Thanks JerryT for sharing the link, it was great! I kept playing over and over!!!
Cheers!!
Jacklyn
I am impressed with Sony, Ron and Starz for how they are incorporating the fans into the process. They don’t have to reach out to your fans, but they are embracing us by giving out these teasers to show they recognize that we are here. It’s awesome how they have no problem responding to us on social media like Twitter as well.
I think that fans should call the networks and let them know that the series is coming and You want to see it in your own country, help Sony show the networks that there is already a fan base and it would be a profitable program for them. I’m in the U.S., so I will see it, but I think we should all help our beloved international friends get the same opportunity.
Love to all!
Karol
Am I the only person who watched the Fan Gathering event that cringed every time the moderator called Caitriona “Caitlyn”? I hope this lack of professionalism doesn’t reflect upon how Starz treats this series.
Diana – I will be in Phoenix in late February. Is there a chance of getting an autographed copy of Outlander (book 1) from the Poisoned Pen while I’m there? You have said before, in various community posts, that you drop by the store on occasion to sign books but I’m not sure which one of you to contact.
In a perfect world I could come by when you’re there but realistically the chance of you just “happening” to be there while I’m in town is too much to hope for. That said, I am attempting to at least plan far enough ahead that I can visit the bookstore and get an autographed copy.
Love your books – love your short stories – love the way you connect to your fans! Thanks for gifting us with your gifts!
Janet
Dear Janet–
Contact the store. They’ll make a note of whatever inscription you’d like, and I’ll sign it the next time I come in. They’ll either ship it to you, or hold it, if you’d like to pick it up yourself while you’re in town.
And thanks!
–Diana
Hallo Diana !
I love Outlanders.Have all the books.Hope the new book vill com soon to Sweden
Love Sylvia
I have thoroughly enjoyed your books, and am looking forward to both the next one and the TV series. I think the casting is perfect, especially since I think many years ago there was a vague rumor involving Tom Cruise…
I do have two, perhaps odd, concerns. The first has to do with the show. I have noticed that in other period drama, while the men may be appropriately furry, the women are usually free of any body hair. I know Ms. Balfe has already had to have a couple of perms, so perhaps going au natural body hair-wise is asking too much, but if she and the other women whose underarms will be seen -like Geillis when she distracts the crowd so Claire can escape- can take a break from the usual maintenance, it would be far more authentic.
The second, speaking of anachronisms, is in the last book when you mentioned fire ants. They did not arrive in the US until the early 20th century. It’s ironic that out of all the weaving of time travel and magic stones and the gritty depiction of life in the 1700′s in your books, that has been the only thing that struck me as unrealistic, and shocked me (briefly) out of my immersion in the story.
I am planning to attend one of your Seattle appearances, and am anticipating many happy days of reading afterward.
Lauralee
Dear Lauralee–
Thanks! Will make a note about the fire ants. As for underarm hair…that would be a matter for the production team to work out. [g]
Glad you’ve been enjoying the books, though–thank you!
Best,
–Diana
Hi Diana –
I’m mid-way through book #2 and loving it. Love the trailer. Bummed I missed the Starz L.A. event. I had an opportunity to go but my family needed me.
I’m writing you because I’m currently creating a female driven blog for the faith site Believe.com and thought perhaps it might be fun to do a piece on Outlander for you – either the film or your new book coming out.
http://www.believe.com/contributor/Andrea-Frazer/
Full disclosure: The blog is not up yet but will be in a month. Meanwhile, many of my blog posts are already peppering the website in article form.
I’d target getting your 1000 word piece in our newsletter (which hits about 10k people) and then I’d do a f/u later in my blog in its actual home!
Believe.com is a Christian website, and a lot of the women I am writing for are the same demographic as Outlander so it could be a great fit!
I would love to touch on the themes of faith. I am such a big believer in transformation and Jamie, especially in the first book, really finds his faith through his terrible ordeal. Claire is a lovely example of a woman who doesn’t run at the first sign of trouble. She is a fighter! So many women these days (and I used to be one) see love as a product you can buy. But the truth is, love is a verb – an action that requires character, discipline, grit and a good dose of humor.
Quick background on me: I’m a produced TV writer who spent 3 years writing a parenting column for BabyCenter and a sex column at Good Housekeeping. (Though your love scenes far surpassed my conservative audience which, likely, turned your readers into MY readers at BabyCenter!)
I am proposing an article that is part interview on faith/part pre-buzz for movie and a good dose of cheeky fun.
If interested, you can write me directly! APaventi@Spark.net
Best!
Andrea
Dear Andrea–
Appreciate the thought! However, I’m in the Final Frenzy of a book that _has_ to be done by the end of March;there’s no way I can write anything much, beyond the book and the occasional update for this site or my Facebook page. Best of luck with your new blog, though!
–Diana
Like so many thousands of others I am a huge fan of the Outlander series and I am delighted, to say the least, that it is being filmed for a TV series. I live near Toronto, Canada and I am interested to know if we here north of the border will be able to view it. I can’t help but think that it will turn up on PBS sooner or later but when is the big question. I CAN HARDLY WAIT!
I would just like to post a correction. In a reply above it is stated that the Outlander series will be aired in Canada on Showtime. In fact it will be aired on Showcase. A visit to the website of Showcase will confirm this.
Im so excited about the series. Im going to have to put Starz in my summer budget so I can see it. In the meantime Im going to reread Outlander & wishing for a chronological character list to remind me who is who. Is there such a thing? Sorry, Im old & cant remeber yesterday!
I saw this article about Scotland and it made me smile. Enjoy!

Diana,
Three cheers for getting the long awaited mini series started. I am assuming that this will continue with ALL of your books regarding Jamie and Claire! I can’t wait to see them all. Have read and re-read each book at least 5 times, and each time, I find something that I’ve overlooked before. Love them, love them, love them.
My question next, is will the series come out on dvd? I certainly hope so!!! Would so very much love to have a whole collection of the series!!!! So, waiting with bated breath for your answer.
Sincerely,
Daralee Donathan

Daralee,
A minor correction: The Outlander TV series is a regular year-to-year TV series, not a miniseries. The difference is that a miniseries has a set number of episodes, like 8 or whatever, and it ends for good on the last episode. The whole story is planned in advance of filming in a miniseries. But the Outlander TV series, if successful financially and in the ratings, could continue year after year! For many years, hopefully.
For now, Executive Producer Ron Moore has said that the first year (16 episodes) will probably cover most of the first book, OUTLANDER. But a second and third year may not cover a book each… it will depend on how the adaptation and its story arcs develop, he said.
About DVDs, Diana doesn’t decide when or if those come out. That will probably be Sony who will decide when and where, the same folks that sell the international rights.
Anyway, logically a show this popular and highly anticipated on a global scale is definitely going to come out on DVDs, unless we’ve been thrust into a parallel universe where media corporations don’t want to make money any more. Here’s a way to check: Does Spock have a goatee? (Trekkies will understand…)
And I bet the series will be for sale on download sites like iTunes, too. The show’s premiere is not until August, so planning for releasing DVDs in different countries and regions would logically occur some time after the first season airs.
I bet you’ll get your DVD collection to enjoy for years, no problem! Me, too…
Regards,
Loretta
PS – As a webmaster and programmer, I kindly recommend that folks should NOT post their personal phone number or personal email on this or any other public site, especially along with your real name. There are web robots and stuff that can automatically harvest them off just about ANY site, and add them to autodial and email lists that can drive you nuts. And there are all kinds of disreputable folks out there, too. Safety first, dearest Outlander readers!
God PLEASE don’t let them pick someone LAME for the female rol of Claire Fraserl!!! I have been in AWE of Diana Gabaldon and singing her praises to anyone who reads anything from the back of a shampoo bottle to the thrifty nickel to Laurell K. Hamilton novels!!! I am completely and utterly IN LOVE with James and Claire Fraser and the fact that its going to film is actually (sadly) been one of my most continuous solid dreams for SEVERAL years and i think it might actually do some very REAL and serious psychological damage if the roll of Claire Fraser goes to someone unfit. I’m no professional by ANY standard but I’m deathly afraid that it will go to someone undeserving like Rachel McAdams or (God forbid!!!) Cameron Diaz!! Leelee Sobieski would be perfect! But if not her then maybe Claire Danes??? I know it’s been a while since they’ve been in the limelight but Claire is too very precious to be cast by just anyone!! This is not just a comment or an opinion… This is a prayer! I hope that someone (((ANYONE))) will consider and/or answer it!

If there is someone who would like to speak with me my email is sometimes unpredictable but i have a cell that I’m willing to throw out there. Even as dangerous, a tiny bit foolish and out of character as it for me to something like this!!! 1 (731) 931 0889
Dear Bobbie–
Claire is being played by the wonderful Catriona Balfe, an absolutely terrific Irish actress who completely inhabits Claire–I’ve seen her do it. [g] You’ll be thrilled.
–Diana
I am so excited. I can’t wait for the show! I am excited about Claire and Jamie…wish his hair was a little bit more red because in the trailer sometimes it looks muted and more brown. But oh well, this is going to be amazing! WOO HOO!
Hi
Just saw the trailer for the first time and i must say it looks awesome.
I just dont understand all the fuss about how the actors playing Claire and Jamie look.
Off all the books i have read i can can come up with only one person who looked the way i imagined him to look, that being Russel Crowe as Jack Aubrey.
I, too, have made my own assumptions of the characters and how the look. My only certainty was the Randall character, both Frank and the Black jack…that said. To me, those two are personified by Jason Isaacs. It’s hard not to picture the brutality of Isaacs as seen in the Patriot. An easy parallel made to the qualities of Black jack Randall. Can’t wait for the series.
Dear Shea–
Well, you’re entitled to your opinion, just as everyone is. Fwiw, my own opinion is that while Jason Isaacs is a fine actor, the character he played in “The Patriot” (horrible, simple-minded, politically correct, emotionally manipulative thing) was deliberately two-dimensional, a cartoon Bad Guy that everyone could go, “Boo! Hiss!” whenever he turned up–hardly a model for Captain Randall, who has–I hope–summat more nuance and intelligence. I’m more than pleased with what I’ve seen of the tv adaptation, though, in terms of script, directing, photography _and_ acting, and I think y’all will be pleased as well.
Best,
–Diana
