  1. So, my little theory before episode 10 aired was that Claire might try to send Fanny back through the stones to keep her parents from making the fatal journey to find Jamie and Claire, since they showed Fanny with the gem stone. Also, I agree with other comments that they should have given more closure to the last episode. The British shows really do an awesome job of ending a series. They close up each story line so well and leave you with a feeling of “what a good ending!” American shows sometimes infuriate with their endings! I was relieved with this one, but felt they could have done a much better and more complete ending since it was such a beloved show. I’m so glad that we will have book ten to know the true finale of the greatest romance.

  2. Heavy Sigh! I’m not a fan of the final episode. As a book reader, I will stand firm that their pages contain the true story.

I generally try to stay away from book to TV adaptations because I always end up disappointed. There is nothing like getting lost in a good book and no one will every convince me otherwise. I didn’t start watching the TV version of Outlander until COVID hit and I was pleasantly surprised how close the series followed the books. Seeing my beloved Jamie and Claire come to life mesmerized me and so began many nights of binge watching until the wee hours of the morning.

The show started to fall flat for me around Season 6 when there were less episodes, more material axed from the books and too many storylines either changing or being left out entirely. At that point, the writing was pretty much on the wall that this show was beginning a transition to the end. I remained faithful because I was hooked.

Season 8 was a bitter disappointment. Don’t get me wrong, there were parts I loved yet so much I disliked! The whole Fanny storyline was unnecessary and we were left with so many questions once the time travel element was introduced. I would have loved to see Denzell get his happy ending with Dottie instead. I squeeled with delight when Buck was brought back. I enjoyed his character and always felt there should have been more than just leaving him in 1735. Killing off Fergus was a cop out. I know it’s hard to see a child die but we’ve seen it many times over the course of this series. I’m overjoyed Jamie and William finally got their moment. That part of the story was very well written and acted. The ending was a hug disappointment. Sam and Cait were brilliant per usual but that entire episode was all over the place and left too many open-ended questions and was not the satisfying ending the show and actors deserved. It followed in the footsteps of the Sopranos and Game of Thrones. I did enjoy the after credits scene with Diana. I’m glad someone paid hommage to Herself.

So I guess for now I just wait for Book 10 and hope if it is decided to further this story on the screen that the writers stay a bit closer to the story. The fans, the actors and the author deserve a more befitting ending.

  3. Hello D, saw the show first, just a few years ago. Made me want to read the books. What a fascinating woman you must be in your private life.:) That said: I myself look forward to the Movie extensions of the show. Where we can watch the Final book unfold. IT was a Great Ending to the Many different directions this Final book could take. Can’t wait. Thank you.

  4. Well, I am very disappointed with the ending of the show as I feel they tried to cram way too much in and really did not do justice to the final episode. With the build-up earlier in the season with Claire reviving the baby – and alluding to Master Raymond (the blue light) not to mention Claire coming into her “full power” when her hair is completely white — completely glossed over. The show owed it to the viewership to nail the ending, and they just blew it. Feeling a bit reminiscent of the Game of Thrones last few episodes. What a shame. Cannot wait for book 10′s release!

  5. Good afternoon Diana, I really enjoyed the whole series and the cast was amazing. Really sad to see it end . I first discovered the first book at a used bookstore and picked it up by chance. What a surprise! Every time a new book comes out I start the whole series over again. Can’t wait for the tenth book. Thank you so much for the excellent reading. I especially enjoyed your cameo at the end

  6. I remember reading the very first book of the series back in the late 80‘s or early 90’s, when I read about it on a CompuServe forum. I was intrigued, it sounded like a great novel for my upcoming Scotland holiday, with a brilliant opener (”People disappear all the time“), and I enjoyed it very much. Then somehow life happened, with work, kids, dogs, family, what have you, and I never even learned that there was a sequel, let alone more sequels!

Fast forward thirty-odd years and I stumble across a Netflix suggestion. The name of the series doesn‘t ring any bells, but the storyline does: Wasn’t this that time-travelling nurse with the glorious Highlander I had read decades ago in my university days? I click to watch. The series is gripping and charming, albeit rather graphic at times (and I will forever by grateful that I watched Tobias Menzies first in The Crown and not in this), but the actors have perfect chemistry and the supporting cast is excellent and a joy, especially Rupert, Angus, Ned Gowan, Jenny and Ian. I start googleing and see that there are not one but eight more books, yay! I have always been more of a reader than a TV watcher, so I stop watching after the end of season one and start reading the set I ordered and that had arrived in the meantime.

It takes me the better part of a year to get up to speed, but finally I‘ve made it through and I must say that I was a bit disappointed that most of it takes place in the New World and not in Scotland, and there are too many uninteresting side quests (e.g. all that Percy Beauchamp / Richardson stuff, or the Amaranthus / Benjamin Gray storyline), and WAY too many time travellers for my taste. Honestly, at this point one feels that every other character is a traveller and you wonder whether they don‘t have to actually queue up at the stones and pick a number who‘s going next). But I can‘t deny it is overall a fascinating read and definitely one of the great love stories in literature.

So then I decide to start the TV series, re-watching season one and binging through the lot. I notice the same thing as in the books, and it‘s even more amplified here: I don‘t really emotionally care for the New England parts and, maybe it’s because I‘m European, but I am not particular interested in the details of the American revolution era. Scotland has always held a special place in my heart, though; Scotland is the magic ingredient of the books, the fairy dust if you will, that had kept me reading. Scotland and seasons 1-3, but especially season 1 caught lightning in a bottle.

I think it was pretty obvious that especially the two main actors were quite through with the series by season 6 or 7, and so was I, truth be told. I had a brief flicker of hope once they returned to Scotland with Young Ian, but was irritated by the ”new Jenny“, I get that the original actress wasn‘t available, but she was so very good that her replacement was quite a blow. The ending of Season 7 with the hint at Faith having lived after all was completely annoying and the moment the series lost all remaining credability for me. I only watched season 8 because I have a hard time quitting anything I once was so invested in, but it was a disappointing one. The whole Faith storyline was, pardon me, idiotic and nonsensical and a slap in the face. Faith can travel? Whatever for, to bridge this series with that abominable fan fic spin-off? Another slap in the face was the fire-at-the-printshop episode, totally unnecessary and with an ending totally out of character for Marsali. Andwhere, pray tell, was Claire the whole season? She had what felt like three minutes of screen time, while we got to plow through that stupid Amaranthis/William storyline. And don‘t even get me started on the Lord John / Percy / Richardson adventure. No, season 8 was a total bummer for me.

Finally we get to the last episode, the grand finale. And I caught myself looking at my watch, repeatedly. Endless good-byes, followed by a brief, hectic battle that felt somewhat anticlimatic. The flashback with Jamie as the ghost was probably done because the fans apparently had asked about it, but I don‘t really see what the scenes added. I was particularly wondering when that scene would take place – logically, it must have been after Culloden and when Claire had returned to 1948, but then why aren‘t his clothes battered and worn as they were just moments before (in his time) when he had accompanied here to the stones and sent her back in time? It didn‘t help that the actor‘s face had visibly aged since season 1 (13+ years ago) and looked somewhat costumed. (Had he ever worn that squeaky-clean blue bonnet before?)

As for the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moments of the blue light appearing and their gasping breath at the end, that was just sloppy editing. The show runners should have known that those two moments were too brief to register.
A few more frames wouldn‘t have been amiss, I think. Having read the books i know that both still live and the story goes on, but those fans who have only watched the show are likely wondering wtf they just saw.

Finally, there’s the ”easter egg“ with you in the book shop: That was a nice touch and a hats off to you from the producers, I liked it. I laughed out loud at the mumbled ’Karen … I can spell that‘. Nice one.

Overall, a great epic love story. I’d definitely recommend the books over the show overall, but the first few seasons of the show are great, too. Thank you, and I’m looking forward to reading book #10.

  7. I just rewatched and realized I missed the fact that Claire’s eyes were open!!!! So they are both alive!!!!

And I missed the cheeky book signing bit.

Okay, feeling a bit better now.

I am just thankful the final book is not finished and there will be more of an explanation.

I will be so happy to preorder.

  8. I loved the ending.
I have for weeks wondered how it would end and hoping it wouldn’t leave us upset, as endings normally do.
    This ending though was beautiful.

  9. Well I am not sure what to make of the t.v. ending.

I was actually talking out loud and yelling! What the heck.

And Jamie opening his eyes was a jump scare reminiscent of the ending of Carrie, with her hand shooting up from the grave. For heaven’s sake. Diana, I know the book will have a better ending.

We finally get the full circle reveal of what we have known in our readers’ heart’s all along: that was indeed dear Jamie ghost looking up at Claire in the window.

There are so many tell-tale bits to ponder over. Fanny (Frances) ((My great grandmother’s name)) picking up that stone and not being able to hold it. Mandy and Jem not being able to “see” Jamie or baby Davy. Now Jamie can ask Jem about that.

Jamie turning from ghost to full color young Jamie at the stones.

And will Claire now have her full powers? More on Master Raymond.

Jamie coming back and Claire being gone reminding me of Romeo and Juliet.

As a reader of the books, I am just so puzzled at how the show began veering off from the books and cannot wait for the true ending to come.

Not sure my comment can be published bc it may spoil things if someone has not watched the tv ending.

I am not going to deny: this t.v. ending has me shook!!

P.S. I loved where Claire had written “the beginning of our story.” Made me want to read all the books all over again.

  10. This last episode was absolutely heart wrenchingly beautiful. Kudos to the actors and directors and ALL the staff. I loved the very ending scene in the book store giving cameos to important people and of course HERSELF, And the call back to the beginning, and the blue vase and forget me knots. I could go on and on. But now that the show has wrapped I hope Diana will have more time to finish Blessings!!

Thanks so much for this wonderful series

  11. Diana,
I’ve been told that “every story is an experiment.” I’m so grateful for the success of yours in “Outlander.” Sublime storytelling, there is simply no one that compares. Thank you! I look forward to book 10, and hope you have many more stories to share with the world.

  12. I adored the final episode. I am so happy that the ending is ambiguous and not everything is fully explained, but in a way that still ends the episode and lets us imagine what happens next. It’s a relief not to have every mystery drawn out and answered with crayons like most shows do nowadays. Frankly, I don’t want Jamie and Claire’s story to continue onscreen, because it’s concluded in such a wonderful way. The ending was wonderful for their TV story, I loved seeing your cameo, I loved the little breadcrumbs, I loved it all. Thank you for contributing to such a fantastic show, so, so much. It’s rare for books to actually be adapted well nowadays and this is one of the few shows the nailed it and stuck the landing. I *would* adore seeing more of their universe and now I’m psyched for BoMB to come back <3 Lord John in the future perhaps? But if all I ever get is Outlander and Blood of My Blood I’ll still count myself beyond happy because it’s more than enough.

  13. I really love the ambiguous ending. Reminds me something of a Job story ending which can be interpreted either as the healing or the afterlife. A very neat tying of a time loophole with Jamie’s ghost arranging the whole show. And that wee bit after the credits was a nice touch! Thank you Diana for the incredible story, anticipating greatly the last book.

  14. Happy that Jamie lived, but the ending was incomplete. Why not finish on the Ridge with everyone. Please do a better job on the ending of the final book. As loyal readers of these books, we deserve a better ending.

  15. I’d like to add to my comment.

Is it just me who’s noticed that the title of the last episode, “And the world was all around us,” is identical to the last sentence in the book “Outlander”?

I think that was intentional, and from my point of view, it brings things full circle.

Jamie and Claire’s love transcends time, and they remain connected. My interpretation is that Claire will manage to bring Jamie back, and that dries my tears.

And then I’d like to highlight the fantastic soundtrack by Bear McCreary.

It captivated me from the very first season, and I thought the soundtrack for season 7 was already the best. But season 8 is truly fantastic! It was further enhanced by the end credits track, “Across the Sea and Sky.”
    Sung by Raya Yarbrough.

It’s been a long time since a soundtrack made me cry. “A Life of a Fraser” features themes from seasons 4 to 7. “King’s Mountain” gave me goosebumps. And “The Battlefield Is Ours” terrified me. He truly managed to perfectly capture all the emotions alongside the visuals, and I think he deserves recognition and at least a Grammy for that!

    • Good catch! The full sentence is “ And the world was all around us, new with possibility.”

Which perfectly fits the last scene…and worked on me because I can’t get my mind off it and have been thinking about all the possible directions the rest of their story could take.

I watched the last agonizing scenes a couple of times & one thing I noticed was that in one short clip in the dark of night, Claire was bent over Jamie with her hands over his chest and moving her fingers. It reminded me of when Master Raymond cured her by the laying on of hands with the blue light. I always assumed that Claire would have that power when her hair turned white. While there was no blue light, I think her memories of their love (as in the flashbacks) powered her through.

So now I’m imagining where/when they were when they woke up. I’d love it if they woke up in Bree, Roger & Claire’s “present day” and had a real life version of that great dream Thanksgiving dinner she had many episodes ago.

  16. Having started the Outlander journey with your first book in 1991, the books have been beautifully captured in the tv series, if not exactly. I watched the last minutes of the last episode of the last season several times. I appreciate the choice of the ending, first and foremost because it leaves the viewer with hope and secondly it confirms the prophecy from the Female Shaman who told Claire that when all her hair was white she would have come into her full power of healing and wisdom. So fitting to have them lying next to each other, a cloud of white hair, framing her angelic face, resting next to Jamie, bringing him back to life.

  17. Did Jamie live?

  18. Hi, Diana. Thank you for writing the best love story ever. I love Claire and Jamie. I enjoyed all the Outlander seasons. I have only read the first book, looking to acquire the others. I am so impressed by your writing, and proud that you were a Scripps graduate.

  19. I cannot wait for book 10 to be released. Your story telling is so elaborate and detailed. The finale was okay in the show , however it lacked the depth you always put into the story. It felt underdone, there are so many characters that we didn’t see how their lives went on and I didnt care so much for the fact that they mourned Jamie before he was dead. It was so unlike all the characters to do that with the exception of Claire , she’s always worried. I guess it could have been worse but I will wait patiently to satiate my craving for your story telling in book 10, and the true finale that you come up with. Thank you for the best book series I’ve ever read !

  20. Dear Diana~
A most marvelous series depicting what could be fit into TV format. Of course, everything could not be included in the series. That is why we have the books, which are paramount to the story of Jamie and Clair. I was in tears nearly the entire last episode. It was not just Jamie and Claire, but the war and our fight for independence and everything that was given up to have it. I think I sometimes forget how very precious our independence is and this last episode made me very aware of the cost of it. In regards to the very end, I saw Claire’s hair all white and Jamie’s eyes open and I swear I heard a sigh. I am a believer that such a love they had, could overcome even death. Stranger things have happened, after all. My heartfelt thanks for the decades of enjoyment I have had with your most imaginative story I look forward to the continuing story of “Blood of My Blood” with great relish. Blessings to you, and your family, for all the time and effort it took to complete “Outlander”. I look forward to Book 10 and will continue to re-read all the books as long as I live.
    ~ love and blessings~
