Well, so the witching hour has come—and with it, the final episode of Outlander (the show), Ep. 810: “And the World was All Around Us.”

Let me know what you think! If you like, please add a web comment using the “Leave a Response” form below.

(And let us also remind ourselves that Book Ten, A BLESSING FOR A WARRIOR GOING OUT, is yet to come….)

  1. A scene from season 1, episode 1 has always peaked my interest. Halfway through the episode, when Claire and Frank are exploring around the stones, a young girl, from the earlier dancing group, with curly brown hair, comes back to retrieve her head dress. After retrieving it, she sits down and looks into the distance, as if waiting. Was this just a way to end the scene, giving a reason for Frank and Claire to leave and capture the scenic beauty, or does this girl have future significance in the story?

  2. Dear Ms. Gabaldon,
Thank you for writing the Outlander series of books. They have resonated so strongly with me with me these past years as I have been fortunate to experience a long, vibrant marriage and relationship with a man much like Jamie and, I surmise like your husband as well. While my husband, Harry, is not an 18th century Scottish laird – as a now retired large animal/equine veterinarian- he is a truly exceptional and honorable man who still makes me laugh and also go weak at the knees when I see him. How lucky we are! I think what resonates with me about your writing is how vivid and immediate the characters become in my mind – how intimate the relationship is between partners who come into – and sustain – a relationship as equals. Many thanks for this world you have given us. And if you ever are in Connecticut you are welcome at our small farm anytime! Susan

  3. I came to the Outlander world just a little later than some as I joined the legions of fans around season 3 after visiting Scotland and not wanting to leave that beautiful historic land where my not too distant family once called home. Like the Frasers, we also ended up in America, even though my soul has always deeply felt for a land I had never known.

I started the first book around the same time I started watching the show and then had to put it aside due to a life that was so busy there was just no time to dedicate to such a bountiful series. But I absolutely love books and reading so I have picked it up again now that I have finished watching the final episodes-sometimes it makes the characters more “real” since you can connect a voice and a face to them. It was such a sad moment when the last credits rolled on season 8 and we realize as fans that it is potentially done for good. The shock of an ending that left me screaming, “No! You can’t end it like this!” since like everyone else I wanted closure of the very happy kind where Jamie, Claire and their family could finally have some semblance of peace now that the war would be coming to an end soon. Yes, I would love to see them again in Scotland, but would they really go back after every journey keeps them on the Ridge? Would that even make sense after everything they sacrificed for their lives in America?

So after my lengthy post, all that is left to say is that as we all wait for the final book to be released, I will start my search for the set of books (maybe even the UK versions?) and go back to the beginning where it all started with Claire and Frank and the ghost of Jamie that would call us all back to the past.

  4. I am a descendant of the Tower Hill plantation in eastern North Carolina. I grew up hearing that George Washington stayed there several times but not sure I believed it until now. May I ask what resource you got the information?? I also spent my summers as a child at the foot of Grandfather Mountain & have loved all the history of our state that you have now made famous!! I would love to hear how you got all your research of my beautiful state.
    Thank you,

  5. Very disappointed with the ending…akin to killing off Superman,Batman and the Phantom in one foul swoop. If we are to believe in magic and mystery then a Happy ending is not an impossible ask….I hope the book takes a detour from this direction…

  6. I just wanted to thank Diana for such a wonderful and riveting series. I am hoping for more stories to come. Lord John, William, Brianna, Roger, Jemmy, Mandy, Davy, Fanny, Master Raymond, Gellis…you have so many was to go and have us all wanting more. I am intrigued with the auras of the characters and Brianna’s and Roger’s childrens abilities to sense each other and other’s. Again, Thank you. You have such a wonderful gift and thank you for sharing.

    • I have not yet seen series 8/10 however I am so fascinated with both the story line and fantastic acting of Catriona and Sam. The sets were wonderful and realistic. I am totally blown away and have watched the complete series 3 times and will probably watch it again.

  7. PLEASE do not post pictures of snakes! It makes me afraid to touch the computer!

  8. I FIND THE ENDING VERY CONFUSING. DID THEY BOTH DIE? oR DID THEY GO ON? i WOULD STILL LIKE TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO BRIanna roger and everyone else too.

  9. I was somewhat disappointed with 8/10. I expected a happy ending, have they not had enough tragedies in their lives. A happy ending with all the family (including Ferguson) enjoying dinner in NC or back in Scotland.

  10. I am bereft.
As an avid reader I have always felt that books are better than film, yet, to my surprise I quickly became addicted to the Outlander film series. I do understand the difficulty of putting together a film series based on such richly detailed books, but this tv series, with such exquisite acting, has done a remarkable job. This makes it so very hard to say goodbye.
There are so many ideas and opinions being expressed now that it’s mind-boggling. Some have made me think, some have made me scoff. All are valuable and thought-provoking. Even though many people seemed to feel that things moved too slowly, I was happy to be able to say goodbye to old friends. ( But not Fergus! That was a poor move.) I have questions about some of the characters. What about Buck? Fanny is in the books, why is her storyline on tv so different? Where is William riding in the clip at the beginning? And why is he smiling so?
Most important, of course, is the relationship between Jamie and Claire. They are the heart and soul of both books and tv. I knew that heartache was coming, but I didn’t realize so much confusion would come along for the ride. Did Jamie die? Did Jamie and Claire die? Did they/their souls drift off into eternity? Did Claire revive them both to go fill out their lives happily on the Ridge? I know what I desperately want the answer to be, what it definitely will be in my peace-craving head, but gee, Starz, couldn’t you have given us just a few more seconds? I didn’t see anyone’s eyes open the first time around. Finally saw Jamie’s open , had to watch yet again to see Claire’s eyes open. I still can’t see the blue light. And the gasp of air! Some people heard just Jamie, some heard Jamie and Claire. It’s fine , I suppose, for each of us to be comfortable with our own interpretations, but really I wish the answer was a wee bit clearer. Thank heavens we can look forward to book 10 and every bit of Diana’s well thought out detail and rich storytelling in the meantime…
    I am bereft.
