I am excited beyond words that there are more Lord John Grey novellas on the way! I started reading your Outlander series over the summer (I'm on the Fiery Cross!) and I absolutely fell in love with Lord John Grey. So much so that I took a bit of a detour to read Private Matter and Brotherhood of the Blade! He's so enjoyable to read: it's hard to explain that he's serious, hilarious, awkward and that's what makes me so endeared to him. Now that there are zombies I practically am dancing in my chair -- can't wait!

I keep hoping with everything new that I read that von Namtzen will make another appearance. He's easily one of my other favorites (right up there with Fergus -- apparently I'm pulling for the side characters these days). I loved their angle so much in Succubus and Brotherhood of the Blade. I cried, not gonna lie.

ALSO! Here's hoping I'll be able to go to your book signing when you come up to San Francisco on the 28th of September.

This got kind of long winded; sorry for gushing! <3

Sleeping with cockroaches in Samoa...she had a fun experience. I've seen butterflies sip salt (and probably other minerals) from sweaty people. Guess roaches might do the same thing, but a large tropical species has an ick factor that a dainty lepidopteran doesn't have. Did you ever see the movie "Joe's Apartment"?
Anonymous--

Oddly enough, I found that bit (cockroaches eating eyebrows) in the Reader's Digest version of a biography of Robert Louis Stevenson's wife (read many, many years ago) in which she noted the giant Samoan cockroaches that fed on her eyebrows when she fell asleep.

My general thought would be that the cockroaches were probably foraging for salt from sweat that accumulates there, rather than actually eating the hairs--but someone waking up with a cockroach on their face probably wouldn't wait to see.

--Diana

Eating eyebrows is not an activity I've ever heard attributed to cockroaches. Where did you find that one? I have heard locals don't like yellow boas and will chop them up, pour rum on the pieces, and set them on fire. After coaxing snakes to eat dead mice (most prefer live food)it sounds like John got really lucky to find one that would eat a piece of ham. Hand reared as a pet?

Why is it, I wonder, that silver-backed hairbrushes always come in pairs? Surely you can only use one at once? Every novel set in the 18th-19th century features them, so it's either true or a literary version of an urban legend.
